About GForge

We’ve Been Doing This Since 2002 — And We’re Still Independent

GForge started as a fork of SourceForge, back when open-source collaboration tools were just getting started. Nearly 24 years later, we’re still an independently owned, self-hosted alternative to the big DevOps platforms — built by a small team that actually uses what it ships.

Built to Last, Led by Someone Who’s Actually Building It

GForge started in 2002 as a fork of SourceForge, back when it was the center of open-source collaboration online. While most of the industry chased whatever tool was trending, GForge kept doing one thing well: helping real teams build real software, in one place, without switching tools.

In 2011, Tony Bibbs bought the company and reorganized it as The GForge Group, Inc. He’s led it ever since — nearly 15 years now, alongside a small team that ships based on what customers actually ask for, not what looks good in a roadmap deck.

We’re proud to be the opposite of “big and distant.” Working with GForge feels like doing business in a small town, where people know your name, take your call, and genuinely care whether your team succeeds.

The Person Behind GForge

Tony Bibbs, President and Owner of GForge

Tony Bibbs bought GForge in 2011 and has led it ever since.

Tony Bibbs

President & Owner, The GForge Group

Tony is the Owner and President of GForge, a veteran software platform born from open-source innovation and refined over more than two decades helping teams deliver better software. He bought the company in 2011 and has spent the years since focused on integration by design: one platform for planning, code, reviews, CI, docs, and artifacts, without brittle glue code — backed by real human support: guided setup, training, and workflow tailoring.

Open-source leadership Led Geeklog CMS, mentored via Google Summer of Code
Public-sector impact Modernized critical systems at State of Iowa
Deep engineering roots Embedded software at Rockwell for GPS receivers
Customer-driven product Many features began as customer suggestions
More About Tony

Tony’s path to GForge ran through consulting (Norstan), product and community work (Geeklog), entrepreneurship (Apteno L.C.; Iowa Outdoors, grown to 1M+ monthly page views and later acquired), and public service (State of Iowa — architecture, payments, identity, and emergency response systems).

Since buying and leading GForge in 2011, Tony has focused on integration by design: one platform for planning, code, reviews, CI, docs, and artifacts, without brittle glue code. He pairs this with human support: guided setup, training, and workflow tailoring.

Tony holds a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa and lives in the Des Moines Metro.

The Way We Work

A few things stay true no matter how the product grows.

Effortless Onboarding

Guided setup, free training, and ready-made templates — you’re productive from day one, not week six.

We Listen, Then We Ship

Small team, big ears. Many of our best features started as a customer request, not a roadmap meeting.

Deploy However You Need

Cloud, on-premises, or private cloud — your data stays on your terms, always.

Real People, Real Support

You’ll talk to someone who knows your setup, not a ticket queue.

We replaced four separate collaboration tools with GForge and cut our annual costs by 30%.
